Short History of Day Surgery

Day surgery facilities provide surgical procedures to patients who are admitted and discharged on the same day and then complete their convalescence at home. Day surgery procedures are provided across Australia in both the public and private sectors.

The earliest cited day surgery practice dates back to the early 1900’s in Glasgow. However day surgery was not accepted as an alternative to inpatient procedures for many decades. Day surgery did not commence in Australia until 1985 when Dandenong Hospital opened the first freestanding unit. Today there are more than 200 freestanding day procedure units in Australia.

Advantages to patients who have a day procedure include: a reduction in cross infection, a reduction in possible thrombo embolism, less separation anxiety caused by overnight stays and less time off work.
